Did you know that...

Lake Vänern is the largest lake in Western Europe and has an average depth of 27 meters (its deepest point is 106 meters)? The lake lies above the deepest valley in a flat landscape with primeval mountains, which explains the number (22,000) of various naturally beautiful islands, skerries and rocks. Its shore measures about 2000 km. Its 5648 km² surface is home to 35 different species of fish, making it the most species-rich lake in Sweden. Of course, this also means that you can fish here in many different ways.

Lake Vänern was originally a bay. The whole of Lake Vänern, which consists of the two parts Dalbosjön (in the west) and Värmlandssjön (in the east), was formed by land uplift when the ice retreated, i.e. about 10,000 years ago. This land uplift, which separated Lake Vänern from the sea, included the existing stocks of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and trout (Salmo trutta) in the lake.
These fish, which normally spend part of their life cycle in the sea, now had to adapt completely to a life in fresh water. The numerous tributaries to Lake Vänern were used as spawning grounds. Such relict stocks of Atlantic salmon in fresh water are unique in the world. The largest of the salmon species in Lake Vänern, the Gullspångslaxen, with specimens weighing up to 20 kg, is the largest freshwater salmon in the world. The most important spawning grounds for the Vänern salmon are the rivers Klarälven and Gullspångsälven.
